Monterrico Beach



Monterrico is a town located on the Pacific coast of Guatemala in the south of the department of Santa Rosa.


Monterrico is the activity center of the “Monterrico Nature Reserve.” The nature reserve is known for its black volcanic sand beaches and the annual influx of sea turtles.


Monterrico also serves as the largest beach tourist recreation center for residents of the capital. The town is becoming more popular with foreign tourists, largely due to local sea turtle conservation efforts as well as the area's laid-back atmosphere.


The nature reserve extends from the María Linda River to the Los Esclavos River, encompassing almost the entire South Coast of Santa Rosa.

How to get there



Travelers have easy access, from the capital or from Antigua. They must take the International Highway CA-09 South to the city of Escuintla, from there, they have 2 options:

1. Take the International Highway CA-02 Oriente to the town of Taxisco, from that point you must take the Departmental Route RD-02 to the La Avellana ferry boat. Then cross the Chiquimulilla Canal in a small boat. On the other side is the town of Monterrico.

2. Continue on the CA-09 SOUTH to Puerto Quetzal and take the Pacific Highway East to kilometer 148.
